Creating your own website, a step by step guide

In our previous article, we convinced you that every business should have their own website (haven’t read it yet? No worries, click here). We at Template Express understand that creating your first page/blog can appear to be very confusing and even overwhelming. It might seem a complex task or sounds like a lot of work, but trust us, it isn’t. Therefore we decided to write this step by step guide to help you with your journey on the world wide web.

Step 1: Have you thought of a name yet?
The first thing that you’ll need is a name for your website. This might sound like a no brainer, but it’s actually one of the most important steps in this process. Everything that you’ll create will be linked to this name and for all the people that you want to reach, this will be their way of connecting to your specific domain.

If you have a brand or a company, it makes sense to use this name as your URL (Uniform Resource Locator) otherwise you might want to choose a domain name that is related to the topic or set of topics that your website will be about.

As you’ve probably already noticed, the internet is a crowded place. Therefore it’s important to keep in mind that your name has to be unique. Let’s say that you want to create a website about sports in general, that’s a cool idea, but the chances are quite high that is already taken by someone else (it is, we’ve checked).

Take your time and think about what you’re trying to do with your website before rushing this step. Once you’ve found a fitting name for your project, you’re ready to go to step 2.

Step 2: Time to register your domain name
Found a suiting name? Then let’s go ahead and register it! You’ll find that there are numerous registering services that will help you with this step, often costing as little as $10 – $20 per year.

Some companies like Bluehost or GoDaddy even offer you a free domain registration in combination with your hosting account (step 3). We’ve worked with these companies before and can recommend both to you. They’ll save you the time-consuming process of having to deal with two different providers – one for registering your domain and one for hosting it – and let you focus on getting your website online as soon as possible.

Step 3: Hosting your website
After registering your name, it’s time to choose a hosting service (unless you’ve opted to combine both services with one provider). It’s important to choose a good hosting provider, here are 4 things that you should take into account to make the right decision;

  • Your hosting service will decide on how fast and reliable your website is
  • They must have good customer service. If your website is down for whatever reason, you want it to be solved as quickly as possible
  • Make sure they offer you some sort of control panel, so you can access the backend yourself
  • Depending on how big your project is, make sure that the hosting company offers you lots of storage space

Step 4: Choose and install your CMS
Here the real fun begins! It’s time to install the software to start building and managing your website. In this guide, we’ll take a deeper look at WordPress (we are a WordPress template provide after all), but you’re free to make your own choice of course. If you think that other content management systems like Drupal, Joomla or Wix might be more suited for your needs, you can read all about them in this interesting article.

If you’ve chosen for WordPress, you’ll notice that it’s a free software platform and in general it’s one of the best all-round packages for creating blogs, websites or building an online business.

You’ll find that some hosting services even offer a simple one-click set up that installs WordPress on your site right from their dashboard. This way you don’t have to deal with any complicated setup or confusing instructions. Your website will be up and running in a matter of minutes.

Step 5: Choose a nice template

Why your business will thrive with its own website

If the global outbreak of covid-19 teaches us anything, it’s that the world adapts quickly when necessary. And so does the consumer behavior. Now more than ever, people are finding their way to online businesses and if you want them to choose your company, you need to be found online – meaning you need a website.

At Template Express we want you to succeed with this, which is why we offer various themes to help you gain your online presence. Still not convinced that your business needs its own website? In this article, you’ll find 6 non-negotiable reasons that will change your mind.

30 percent of consumers won’t even consider buying at your business without a website
Based on online numbers, Americans spend up to 24 hours a week online and are using the world wide web more than 5 hours per day on their mobile phone. If your business can’t be found online, people will consider you less professional than your competitors that do have their own website.

People are looking you up
The old saying ‘your reputation precedes you’ is still very relevant in this modern age. Whether you own a huge restaurant, a gym or a nice little bakery, people will want to know what you have to offer and how other people experience your services before even considering buying something from you.

Answer the consumers’ questions. Quickly.
When was the last time that you looked anyone up in the phone book? Years ago? Exactly! So why should you think that potential clients are willing to make that effort? People want to know the answer to basic questions like ‘How do I contact you’ and ‘What do you offer’ immediately.

Social media presence is simply not enough
So you’re convinced that you don’t need a website because you’re on Facebook? Cool! Get in line, so is every other business in the world.
Also, due to the Facebook algorithm, your organic reach will plummet after not even a week. Also, Americans spent 50 million (!) fewer hours on the platform in 2019 than they did in 2018.

A website saves you money
Once you’ve set up your website, you can basically leave it as is and just update it whenever needed. Especially if you’re using WordPress, maintaining your website is a breeze. At Template Express we even offer you dozens of templates to help to style your online presence.
Compared with traditional means of advertising like newspaper ads, radio commercials or other marketing campaigns, which all reach a limited amount of people, a website is a more cost-effective way to promote your business long term.

A website is always accessible
This article is written during the covid-19 outbreak, which means that most of the businesses are closed at the moment. A website, however, isn’t affected by any pandemic outbreak and can be used to either update your clients with your current situation or to even keep offering your services as usual.

All these reasons apply to all industries and companies. Digital advancement starts with a nice looking website. Start your online journey by getting one of our themes here.
