5 Quick Steps to Improve the UX of Your WordPress Website

The user experience should always come in the first place if you want your website to be a success. Your achievements solely depend on whether or not users like what they see. WordPress has fairly good user experience in its initial version, but if you want to improve UX, you need to go the extra mile and use a custom design or one of the WordPress themes

There is no need for some crazy changes and adjustments. A few crucial additions to design, usability, and content can make a world of difference. Follow the following fast and easy steps that will make your website more user-friendly. Let’s get started.

1. Aim for Simplicity and Predictability
One of the most common mistakes that web designers make is to overdo the design. While trying to make the website beautiful and special, they’ll lose the sense of what users want.

Keeping the design simple will help users browse through the website much faster. Also, they won’t get distracted by design elements. Instead, they’ll focus on your content (which is the goal).

Even though originality is important, you don’t want to completely ruin the usability. Users are used to finding certain elements in certain places and you should stay true to that. Predictability helps with navigation.

Don’t overwhelm users with content. Rather, organize information in different sections.

2. Perfect the Home Page
The home page is possibly the most important page on your website. There are a few reasons for that:

  • It is the first page that first-time visitors see
  • It will be linked to from other sides most often
  • Users get back to the home page from whatever page they first landed one

Since the home page drives the most traffic, you need to ensure that it is the perfect place to start. Think Traffic provides us with a great example of an impeccable and beautiful home page.

Improve user experience by letting them know how your website can benefit them on the home page. They should know from the very beginning what they can expect from this website. Find the best website for paper writing to compose attractive and informative home page content.

Besides the introduction of your website’s purpose, you should also add the most important page or pages. For example, if you run a blog you can add the most relevant and popular blog posts. Show the users the next actionable steps they should take on your website.

3. Upgrade Your Navigation Menu
The standard WordPress menu is fine, but its limitations are the reason why you should think about changing it. Your website will get noticed more if you opt for one of the following WordPress menu choices:

  • Fixed position menu (sticky menu) – Keeps its position on the top of the page while users scroll down.
  • Sliding hamburger menu – A hidden menu that only appears when a user clicks on the hamburger icon. Most common in mobile apps, less common for e-commerce websites.
  • Card or grid menu – Items are displayed in grids. Great for mobile user experience and e-commerce websites.

If you have a lot of pages and information it is better that you use a secondary menu as well. The dropdown or sidebar menu provides intuitive interaction.

4. Add Attractive and Effective CTAs
Call-to-actions are a very important website element. They tell the users what their next step should be and therefore, eliminate confusion. Try to look at them as road signs that help users have an amazing journey on your website.

When it comes to CTAs, you need to pay attention both to their design and their functionality. Position CTA near relevant content so that they help users to identify the next logical step. You can use plugins like Monarch or OptinMonster to get more managing options for CTAs.

CTAs should also motivate users to take action. The only way to accomplish that is to include relevant content.

5. Speed up Your Website
Page speed is vital for the user experience. According to research, up to 40% of users will abandon your site if the page doesn’t load in 3 seconds.

First, you need to measure your website’s speed. The recommended tools for that are PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix. Then you need to identify the unnecessary burden and eliminate it.

Improve the website’s speed in the following ways:

  • Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN)
  • Enable Caching
  • Use only necessary plugins
  • Reduce image size (be careful not to lose in quality)
  • Use external hosting platforms (particularly for larger files such as videos)

These few changes will make a huge difference in your page loading speed.

Final Thoughts
Mastering these steps will take you on a good path to engaging a website. Even simple and quick steps like this can highly improve your website’s user experience. Remember that the path to users’ hearts is through amazing user experience.

Creating your own website, a step by step guide

In our previous article, we convinced you that every business should have their own website (haven’t read it yet? No worries, click here). We at Template Express understand that creating your first page/blog can appear to be very confusing and even overwhelming. It might seem a complex task or sounds like a lot of work, but trust us, it isn’t. Therefore we decided to write this step by step guide to help you with your journey on the world wide web.

Step 1: Have you thought of a name yet?
The first thing that you’ll need is a name for your website. This might sound like a no brainer, but it’s actually one of the most important steps in this process. Everything that you’ll create will be linked to this name and for all the people that you want to reach, this will be their way of connecting to your specific domain.

If you have a brand or a company, it makes sense to use this name as your URL (Uniform Resource Locator) otherwise you might want to choose a domain name that is related to the topic or set of topics that your website will be about.

As you’ve probably already noticed, the internet is a crowded place. Therefore it’s important to keep in mind that your name has to be unique. Let’s say that you want to create a website about sports in general, that’s a cool idea, but the chances are quite high that sports.com is already taken by someone else (it is, we’ve checked).

Take your time and think about what you’re trying to do with your website before rushing this step. Once you’ve found a fitting name for your project, you’re ready to go to step 2.

Step 2: Time to register your domain name
Found a suiting name? Then let’s go ahead and register it! You’ll find that there are numerous registering services that will help you with this step, often costing as little as $10 – $20 per year.

Some companies like Bluehost or GoDaddy even offer you a free domain registration in combination with your hosting account (step 3). We’ve worked with these companies before and can recommend both to you. They’ll save you the time-consuming process of having to deal with two different providers – one for registering your domain and one for hosting it – and let you focus on getting your website online as soon as possible.

Step 3: Hosting your website
After registering your name, it’s time to choose a hosting service (unless you’ve opted to combine both services with one provider). It’s important to choose a good hosting provider, here are 4 things that you should take into account to make the right decision;

  • Your hosting service will decide on how fast and reliable your website is
  • They must have good customer service. If your website is down for whatever reason, you want it to be solved as quickly as possible
  • Make sure they offer you some sort of control panel, so you can access the backend yourself
  • Depending on how big your project is, make sure that the hosting company offers you lots of storage space

Step 4: Choose and install your CMS
Here the real fun begins! It’s time to install the software to start building and managing your website. In this guide, we’ll take a deeper look at WordPress (we are a WordPress template provide after all), but you’re free to make your own choice of course. If you think that other content management systems like Drupal, Joomla or Wix might be more suited for your needs, you can read all about them in this interesting article.

If you’ve chosen for WordPress, you’ll notice that it’s a free software platform and in general it’s one of the best all-round packages for creating blogs, websites or building an online business.

You’ll find that some hosting services even offer a simple one-click set up that installs WordPress on your site right from their dashboard. This way you don’t have to deal with any complicated setup or confusing instructions. Your website will be up and running in a matter of minutes.

Step 5: Choose a nice template
