Installation and Theme Activation

Installing Theme via WordPress Admin Panel (recommended):
  1. open the wp-admin panel (navigate through web browser to the folder where you have installed the WordPress e.g www.your_domain.com/wp-admin/),
  2. login to your wp-admin panel, then from the main menu sidebar, choose 'Appearance -> Themes',
  3. at the top click 'Install Themes' tab,
  4. Type Gym Express into the "search themes" box in the top right.
  5. Once you see the Gym Express theme hover over the image and you will see a blue "Install theme" click this to install the theme to your website.
  6. Once its completed installing the same button will change to read "activate" click it now and the theme will be activate on your website.
  7. from this point on you should be able to follow the documentation.
Installing WordPress Theme via FTP client:
  1. unzip the 'gym-express.zip'
  2. connect to your server,
  3. navigate to the folder where your WordPress is installed,
  4. drill down to /wp-content/themes/,
  5. upload the 'Gym Express' unzipped folder into the 'themes' directory (the path will look like this: wp-content/themes/gym-express),
  6. On your web browser navigate to your wordpress installed website admin section e.g www.your_domain.com/wp-admin
  7. login to your wp-admin panel, then from the main menu sidebar, choose 'Appearance -> Themes',
  8. find the 'Gym Express' theme and click the 'Activate' button next to it.
  9. You have now installed and activated Gym Express theme!

Activate Theme Licence (Pro theme only)

Our Pro version of Gym Express comes with a handy licence key that when acivated allows for simple updates to the theme and access to Template Express's Premium Support forums. These forums are the primary way we resolve any issues and offer advice to our valued customers.

Install the free recommended plugins

We suggest you install and activate the following plugins to take advantage of great features integrated with this theme. Please consult the plugins own documentation on how to use them.

Global Settings

Below are instructions for setting up the general look and feel of the site.

Add logo, website title and description.

  1. Navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Site Identity from the admin dashboard
  2. Upload your website logo
  3. Edit the Site Title and Tagline relevent to your website.
  4. Choose to hide or show Title and Tagline
  5. Upload Site Icon - this is a small image that will appear in the address bar of most Internet Browsers. It's also used if the website is bookmarked to your mobile device.
  6. Save and Publish

Choose your Fonts

Gym Express gives you the choice loads of great fonts that can be assigned to Titles and body text.

  1. Navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Font Settings from the admin dashboard
  2. Assign your Body Font
  3. Assign your Title Font
  4. Save & Publish Changes

Choose your Color scheme

Gym Express offers several options for choosing colors.

  1. Navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Color Settings from the admin dashboard
    • Background Color - This will be visible throughout the site as the main background color.
    • Dark Background Color - Used in footer Widget area and a few sections on the custom homepage.
    • Highlight Color - This will be used for links and any other elements that need highlighted.
    • Text Color On Light Background - Options for title and body text color that will be used if displayed on a light background.
    • Text Color On Dark Background - Options for title and body text color that will be used if displayed on a dark background.

Adding an Excerpt

Some sections on the homepage require you to create Excerpts to populate the area. The instructions below will show you how.

  1. Navigate to New page from the admin dashboard
  2. Often the Excerpt field is not displayed by default, so we will have to activate it first.
  3. Click the Screen options tab in the top right of the screen. This will display field toggles.
  4. Mark the excerpt checkbox so its activated. A new excerpt field should show up below the main content field.
  5. Add your content in this new field
  6. Update or publish your changes.

Page Layout Settings

Gym Express offers you the ability to control the content width of pages and hide/show sidebars.

  • Navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Page Settings from the admin dashboard

Gym Express comes with three menu locations - Primary Menu, Social Menu & Contact Menu.

Primary Menu

Your main website menu.

  1. From the Dashboard navigate to: Appearance -> Menu
  2. Create a new menu called "Primary menu" using the "create a new menu" link.
  3. Next, you need to select the pages you want to add to the menu. You can do this by selecting the pages listed on the left hand side and clicking on Add to Menu button.
  4. After adding pages to the menu, select the theme location where you want to display the menu and click on the ‘Save Menu’ button.

Social Menu

A menu that shows in the header and footer as a list of social media icons that link to the accounts.

  1. From the Dashboard navigate to: Appearance -> Menu
  2. Create a new menu called "Social menu" using the "create a new menu" link.
  3. To add some links expand the Custom Links panel
  4. In your URL add your social media address, e.g. https://www.twitter.com/templateexpress
  5. In the link text add the social media type, e.g. Twitter. This isnt so important as it wont be seen.
  6. Click "Add to Menu" button
  7. In the Main Settings section make sure you mark the Social checkbox.
  8. Click Save Menu
  9. The theme will identify which social media account your linking to and swap out the text for an icon.

Contact Menu

This menu will display in the header bar along side the social menu.

  1. From the Dashboard navigate to: Appearance -> Menu
  2. Create a new menu called "Contact menu" using the "create a new menu" link.
  3. To add some links expand the Custom Links panel

Assign the custom homepage

Gym Express comes with a custom homepage template that can be applied to any page. Once applied you will need to assign that page as the websites homepage. Follow below:

  1. Add a new page called "Homepage"
  2. On the edit screen for this new page, select the "Homepage" template option and Update/publish changes. select homepage template
  3. Now we must set this new page as the static Front page .
    • Click on Settings > Reading
    • Select the option of "A static Page"
    • choose your new "Homepage" to be the Front Page. If you have a news/blog page then you can assign this page to the "Posts Page" option.

Populate the custom homepage

Configure Hero Section

The custom homepage comes with a special Call To Action (CTA) area called the Hero Section at the top of the template. It contains an area for a background image or color, Title, tagline and button to page. Its the first thing customers will see so an attractive image and snappy text will help.

To populate the hero section you will need to create a new deditcated page with a title, excerpt and featured image. This technique is a requirement of the http://wordpress.org/ theme developer handbook.

  1. The hero section is populated by content from a page.
  2. Create a new page specifically to be used as content for this homepage hero.
  3. Give it a title an excerpt and a featured image
  4. If your unsure how to add an excerpt, refer to the How to add an Excerpt section.
  5. Now with this new page created, navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Homepage Settings -> Hero Settings
  6. Select this new page from the Pages dropdown menu and you should see the content populate the hero area.

Add a link

  1. To Add a button, select a page from the "Add Button" option. Its title will be the button label - Highlighted in Purple on the screenshot.

Content Blocks

Gym Express offers two Content blocks that work in the same way as the Hero section in that you must create a dedicated page first with a title, Excerpt and featured image.

  1. This content Block is populated by content from a page.
  2. Create a new page specifically to be used as content for this area.
  3. Give it a title an excerpt and a featured image
  4. If your unsure how to add an excerpt, refer to the How to add an Excerpt section.
  5. Now with this new page created, navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Homepage Settings -> Content Block 1
  6. Select this new page from the Pages dropdown menu and you should see the content populate the hero area.

You have additional options like adding a link, which you do by selecting a page to link to.

Changing the button label and choosing links to posts are features of the Pro version.

Content Block

Call To Action

This is another area to highlight something special about your business. This area benefits from an attractive background.

  1. This Call To Action section is populated by content from a page.
  2. Create a new page specifically to be used as content for this area.
  3. Give it a title an excerpt and a featured image
  4. If your unsure how to add an excerpt, refer to the How to add an Excerpt section.
  5. Now with this new page created, navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Homepage Settings -> Call to Action
  6. Select this new page from the Pages dropdown menu and you should see the content populate this area.
  7. You can edit the button label and change the alignment of the text.

Recent News

This area displays the latest 3 posts from a specific post category.

  1. From the admin dashboad navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Homepage Settings -> Recent News
  2. Give your area suitable Title and Sub-Title.
  3. Select the Category you want to display posts from.
  4. Save & Publish.

Testimonial Section

Use this section to highlight positive feedback from customers about your business.

  1. Install and activate the recommended plugin Good Reviews for WordPress
  2. Add reviews by navigating from the dashboard to Reviews -> Add New
  3. Once you have a few reviews ready to display navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Homepage Settings -> Testimonial Section
  4. Paste the following shortcode [good-reviews limit=5] into the shortcode field. Read the plugin documentation to configure the shortcode display
  5. You can add a title, sub-title and background image from this customizer panel
  6. Choose Parallax effect if wanted.
  7. Save & Publish.
Testimonials

Instagram Gallery

Promote your Instagram account by displaying an attractive gallery on the homepage.

  1. Install and activate the recommended plugin Enjoy Plugin for Instagram,
  2. Once installed and activated, navigate to: Settings -> Enjoy Plugin for Instagram
  3. Connect to your business account by clicking the blue "Connect your account" button.
  4. Connect Instagram Account
  5. Once connected with your account, switch over to the Settings Tab.
  6. Select your account or a suitable Hashtag and configure the display settings you would like.

  9. Navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Homepage Settings -> Instagram Gallery.
  10. Choose to display a section title or not. If you prefer not to have a title leave the field blank.
  11. Choose Grid or Carousel for the display method.

Google Map

Add an attractive and useful map to your homepage so customers know where to find you.

  1. Install and activate the recommended plugin WP Google Maps
  2. Once installed and activated, navigate to: Maps -> Settings
  3. You will need to activate your API KEY before the plugin works. follow the instructions for obtaining your key from this page.

  1. Follow the plugin documentation to create your map.
  2. Once you have your map created, Navigate to Maps -> maps and copy the shortcode for your map.

  5. Navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Homepage Settings -> Map Settings.
  6. Paste your shortcode in the shortcode field and make sure you have the "Show Map" checkbox checked.
  7. Save & Publish changes.

Homepage Control Sections

With all these sections populated on the homepage you may find the need to rearrange them or even turn a section or two off. This is what the Homepage Control plugin allows you to do.

  1. Install and activate the recommended plugin Homepage Control,
  2. Navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> Homepage Control.
  3. You will see a list of sections with checkboxes next to the titles.
  4. You can drag each section around to change the order.
  5. You can turn off a section by unchecking the checkbox next to the section title.
  6. Save & Publish changes.

WooCommerce support

If your using WooCommerce with this theme you will see an additional three sections in the homepage control dedicated to selling Products.

Use the same instructions as above. Drag sections around or turn them off.

We have used a few Free plugins to populate the footer widget area on our demo. We will outline how we did this below.

Opening Hours

  1. Install and activate the recommended free plugin WP Opening Hours
  2. From the Dashboard navigate to Opening Hours.
  3. Click "Add New"
  4. Give your hours a title and setup the opening times.
  5. Publish your settings.
  6. From the Dashboard Navigate to Appearance -> Widgets.
  7. Expand the Homepage contact widget area
  8. Drag over the Opening Hours: Overview widget to this panel.
  9. Make any adjustments to the widget and Save your settings

  1. Install and activate the recommended free plugin Contact Form & SMTP Plugin for WordPress by PirateForms
  2. From the Dashboard navigate to Appearance -> Widgets.
  3. Expand the Homepage contact widget area
  4. Drag over the Pirate Forms widget to this panel.
  5. Make any adjustments to the widget and Save your settings

Sign Up form in the Footer

  1. Install and activate the recommended free plugin Mailchimp for WordPress
  2. From the Dashboard navigate to Mailchimp for WP -> forms.
  3. Edit the form fields to look like the screenshot below.
  4. Save your changes
  5. From the Dashboard Navigate to Appearance -> Widgets.
  6. Expand the Footer Column 3
  7. Drag over the Mailchimp Sign-Up form widget to this panel.
  8. Make any adjustments to the widget and Save your settings
